About Us
Dr. Justin Nylund, DDS
 Dr. Justin Nylund is honored to join the team at Taos Cosmetic Dental Center, and is excited to call Taos his new home. Dr. Nylund is carrying on a family tradition in dentistry – he is the tenth dentist in his family spanning four generations! Growing up, Justin was intrigued by his grandfather’s decision to take root in the small town of Rogers, Arkansas where he practiced dentistry until his retirement in 1986. And just like his grandfather, Justin has made a commitment to join a small town community, where he plans to maintain dental health and improve the smiles of citizens in Taos and the surrounding areas.
Dr. Nylund was born and raised in Dallas, Texas where he attended the Episcopal School of Dallas. Growing up, Justin participated in soccer and track, and he was also active in Boy Scouts, having attained the highest ranking of Eagle Scout. Justin also attended the Philmont Scout Camp in Cimarron, New Mexico. Following graduation from high school, Justin moved to Memphis, Tennessee to attend Rhodes College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies.
Justin received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from the prestigious University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. Upon graduation, Justin attended a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency in Alamosa, Colorado. While in Alamosa, Justin gained valuable experience in oral surgery and endodontics, and he also developed a passion for pediatric dentistry. Justin has also participated in several dental mission trips in the border towns of Mexico, as well as provided dental care through the Indian Health Service, in both North Dakota and Minnesota.
Dr. Nylund is committed to ongoing, advanced training in all facets of dentistry. This commitment is confirmed by his participation in numerous continuing education courses including the 14th Annual Preceptorship in Dental Implantology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is also actively involved in the American Society of Dental Aesthetics, where he has attended several lectures and hands-on workshops in restorative and aesthetic dentistry. Justin has accumulated over 200 hours in continuing education and is well on his way to earning his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr. Nylund is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the New Mexico Dental Association, the Santa Fe District Dental Society, the Academy of Dentistry International, the Flying Dentists Association, Holistic Dental Association and the Christian Medical and Dental Association.
Justin is an avid outdoorsman, and in his free time he enjoys skiing, fishing, hiking, and camping. He is a member of the Taos Kiwanis club actively involved in his church, and is a member of Taos Search and Rescue.
Dr. Walter E. Jakiela, DDS, M.A.G.D
 Dr. Jakiela graduated from Loyola (now LSU) Dental School in 1970. After graduation, he was stationed with the Army in Albuquerque, where both of his children were born.
After practicing in Ruston, LA he wanted to return to northern New Mexico. He purchased an existing office in 1988 and has expanded the office to meet the growing needs of the practice.
Dr. Jakiela continues to enhance his skills with continuing education and the introduction of new technologies into the practice. He has participated in Give Kids a Smile Day, Donated Dental Services for the Handicapped, and other non-profit organizations.
Currently, Dr. Jakiela is a member of the Santa Fe District Dental Society, New Mexico Dental Association, American Dental Association, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Academy of Laser Dentistry, Pankey Alumni Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Jakiela is one of the few dentists in the state to earn his Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry.
When Dr. Jakiela is not in the office, he enjoys golfing, skiing, watching college sports, playing with Scarlett, his Shih Tzu, and traveling to Mexico.
